Welcome to Bali
One of over 17,000 islands that form the archipelago of Indonesia, Bali offers a wide range of accommodation and some of the best restaurants in the world. With a population of over 4 million people, it is an island of traditions, bustling and thriving in a modern world. Bali is a feast for the mind, body and spirit.
Amongst all the hustle, Balinese culture - ancient and modern - is very prominent in everyday Bali life. Special days on the Balinese calendar will find you walking amongst temple ceremonies, weddings or even cremations. You will frequently see blessing rituals on local beaches, with women carrying beautifully arranged baskets of fruit and flowers, dressed in colourful Kabaya’s and sarongs.
The Bali culture and religion is centered around Hinduism. Galungan ceremonies are held twice a year to commemorate ancestral visitors returning to earth. You will be able to observe their lining the streets with Penjors, and colourful flags. Nyepi day, a celebration of the New Year according to the Balinese calendar, is a day of silence. On the eve of this day there are numerous Ogah-Ogah parades featuring mythical beasts and musical processions. A fantastic display of Balinese culture, these parades are well worth participating in.
Offerings, known as Canang Sari, are made to the Gods daily, and play a significant role in Balinese life. They appease the spirits, bringing good health and prosperity to the family. You will find small trays made from palm leaves scattered on the ground as you walk, often complete with food, flowers, cigarettes and money.
